Ladislav Železný is Bohemia based artist, radio maker and curator. His work concentrates on sound art, listening, soundscapes, gathering sound, sound footage, sound-specific art, handmade musical instruments and the silence. As a non-cello player, he uses Right Hand of the Universe technique. Since his studies in the field of fine arts with the strong focus to wide range of acoustic arts, among others, he has been dealing in activities related to broadcasting, radio, live broadcasts and ether in sense of singnals transmitting to the space. As one of the authors, he participated in the broadcasting of Lemurie TAZ – independent on-line radio platform, which is connected with the beginnings of the experimental space ROXY/NoD in Prague.
Since 2005, he has also worked as an author of sound installations for galleries and public spaces (e.g. GAMPA, Exposition of New Music Brno, Bludný Kámen, Industra, IGLOO, Pram Studio, Plastik) and as a radio-maker, interdisciplinary musician and sound performer he has participated in many festivals (Multiplace, Share.camp Ultrahang, Experimental Intermedia, Radiophonic, Echofluxx festival, Sound City Days, etc.). In 2011 he was one of the ten finalists of the Europe – a sound panorama project at ZKM. He creates or has created sound and music compositions for short films, radio plays and audio books. During the past years, he was musically contributed in non-verbal theatre and contemporary dance projects in variouse perfoming art’s plaforms and currentely cooperates in the fields of theater with company Boca Loca Lab, and di.pole association. As a music director and sound designer for Czech Radio, he has been engaged in the development of sound design for radio plays and drama works, and since 2013 he has focused as a dramaturge on unconventional music and new forms of radio production, especially with reference to the experimental tradition in art. He curates the project Radiocustica, where among other things he realizes special concert events, live broadcasts or recordings and prepares the programme show Radioateliér associated with exclusive premiere series PremEdition of Radioateliér. For several years now he has been involved in one of Europe’s biggest media bridges – the one-day radio festival Art’s Birthday – Euroradio Ars Acustica Special Evening, which is part of the global conceptual celebration of Art’s Birthday. The radio projects he has collaborated on and his artistic or dramaturgical activities have received numerous awards in his country (Prix Bohemia Radio 2010, 2018) and abroad (Prix Marulič 2014, Grand Prix Nova 2020, Palma Ars Acustica 2022/23, Phonurgia Nova 2020/22, Prix Italia 2021, Prix Europe 2021, Karl-Sczuka-Preis 2019).
He graduated on the field of fine arts from the Art College of Ceramic, the School of Intermedia founded by his teacher Czech artist and arts educator Jan Svoboda and the Faculty of Fine Arts of the Brno University of Technology, where he later worked as an assistant for sound applications and external lecturer. With the Faculty of Arts of Charles University he cooperated on educational project CS 38-89. He teached basic of elektroacoustic music at the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague. And as a freelancer he collaborated with various private company (Pixl-e studio, Tympanum, etc.).
